Hexham Abbey
About
Hexham Abbey
Hexham Abbey was originally built in AD 674 by St Wilfrid, Bishop of York. Now a thriving historical attraction, the Abbey welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year. Alongside the ancient treasures contained in the church there is an interactive visitor centre, café and gift shop.
The Abbey’s Anglo-Saxon underground crypt is St Wilfrid’s original church dating back to
674AD. Visitors will also be able to sit in the sanctuary seat of St Wilfrid, the ‘Frith Stool’, also dating back to the 7th century.
